In 1987, American Airlines decided to remove one olive out of each first-class salad to save costs. No one really noticed it because no one really cared about how many olives there were.
American Airlines saved over $100,000 a year.

This tactic of saving costs, known as Penny-Pinching, became well known to other airlines and companies, United Airlines later adopted this technique and saved over $200 million by getting rid of refresher towels on short flights, removing unpopular juices from the menu, and reduced in-flight videos.
