MUSA (Museo Subacuatico de Arte), Cancun Underwater Museum, by Jason deCaires Taylor

Born in 1974 to an English father and Guyanese mother, Taylor grew up in Europe and Asia, where he spent much of his early childhood exploring the coral reefs of Malaysia. Educated in the South East of England, Taylor graduated from the London Institute of Arts in 1998 with a BA Honours in Sculpture and went on to become a fully qualified diving instructor and underwater naturalist.

In 2006, Taylor founded and created the world’s first underwater sculpture park. Situated off the coast of Grenada in the West Indies it is now listed as one of the Top 25 Wonders of the World by National Geographic. His latest creation is MUSA (Museo Subacuatico de Arte), a monumental museum with a collection of over 500 of his sculptural works, submerged off the coast of Cancun, Mexico

As soon as these sculptures are put in place, they begin to become colonized by algae, coral, sponges, and other organisms, eventually attracting fish and larger species. For his sculptures, Taylor uses environmentally friendly, pH-neutral materials, working with marine biologists to support specific forms of marine life

Taylor’s studio is currently based in Lanzarote part of the Canary Islands.

What does it feel like to arrive in the USA for the first time?

• You are greeted with a huge immigration clearance queue and the whole process sounds “too intimidating” for the first time.
• If you are not acquainted with Hollywood movies, you will have trouble with the accent.
• Accessibility of public infrastructure is a huge deal unlike many other countries. You start to realize this at the airport itself. May be this is something about the “developed” nations.
• The cab drivers in USA really like to talk. They will try to engage in small predictable but sweet conversation.
• Pizza by slices ? Totally American. On my first day in America I learned about things like “gluten-free” pizza,
• “O” is instead “zero”. Too confusing. Your room number is “2-O-3”. Americans do not like decimals too. “Sir, that would be 573” instead of “5 dollars 73 cents”.
• You can actually talk on phone while taking a walk down the road in USA. No one honks. At first I thought it was only America. Later I realized it was only India.
• Americans like guns. It was for the first time I saw guns in hands of civilians :O. I would be scared to talk to someone if I knew they had a gun. I guess that is a cultural thing.
• USA is very expensive. A middle class Indian like me would always convert dollars into rupee in my mind before purchasing anything. It took a few weeks to get rid of that habit. Human labor is particularly expensive.
• Was surprised to see how restaurants like “Madras Cafe”, “Lahore Karachi” and “Udupi Palace” thrive in the same street opposite to each other. Indians and Pakistanis in USA do not hate each other as much as they do at their home turf. It’s really sad how we are so united in foreign land and so divided at home.
• If you would believe, there is actually a button on most traffic crossings in USA (and other developed nations) used by pedestrians to indicate that they want to cross the road. Woah. That was like a super power.
• There are always so many choices available for everything. In India, there was just coffee and tea. In USA there is decaf, espresso, double espresso, latte, mocha, cappuccino, etc. Ordering anything to eat is a nightmare. Americans love customizing food.
• The advertisements in USA are very boring. In India, I sometimes find advertisement funnier than the actual content.

I’ll cast my vote for Killer Whales, their “badass-ness” is rooted in their intelligence.

Example 1: Beaching

Sea Lions might think they are safe in shallows or on the beach - not so.

Example 2: Herding.

They will tactically circle and condense the fish into a tight ball and then take turns charging it with open mouths.

Example 3: Their most impressive tactic.

There are often seals resting on blocks of ice. Typically, it is too difficult or big for them to flip over.

They will size up the situation, and demonstrate strategic thinking on how to solve the problem.

They will emerge at the same time, figuring out the dimensions of the ice. And identify the prospective seal. They can distinguish types of seals, some are easier for them to kill.

They’ll then see if they can break the ice into smaller pieces.

If not, they will circle back and form a line and swim forward quickly to create a wave.

On the below image, you’ll see the iceberg tips up at this point as the water caves in before the wave hits.

Which then knocks the seal off and into the water.

That’s some next level sh-t right there.
