In July 2009 the Polarland Aquarium in China held a free diving contest in their 20ft deep and freezing cold Beluga whale tank with the prize to become a whale trainer. After reaching the bottom of the tank diver yang Yun became unable to swim due to muscle cramps caused by the cold water, Yang thought she would drown when suddenly one of the Beluga grabbed her leg in its mouths and forced her up to the surface. The Beluga's name was Mila and after years of being well cared for by the aquarium staff this beautiful white whale decided to return the favour and save this divers life.

In June 2005 a young Ethiopian girl was kidnapped from her school by a gang of men who wanted to forcibly marry her. She was missing for a week before police found her in a field after escaping the kidnappers and encountering a pride of lions who had scared off the kidnappers and instead of having her for dinner they had protected her. The lions departed once the police arrived and this proves that even the fiercest predators have a soft spot for young girls in distress. Experts believe that the lions reacted to the girls tears as if they were the mews of a lion cub and this is a real miracle because lions would usually attack people.

In November 2004 four lifeguards were swimming in the sea off the coast of New Zealand when they were suddenly surrounded by a pod of Dolphins. Then the lifeguards spotted a huge Great white shark approaching them and thought they were about to become shark chow, however the Dolphins began swimming wildly around them, blocking the sharks path and over the next 40 minutes they guided the lifeguards safely back to shore. Dolphins are among the world's most intelligent animals and this is just one of many stories where they have saved people lives, experts don't know if they have some altruistic sense for creatures in need or they just really hate sharks.

In August 1998 Pennsylvanian Jo Ann collapsed at her home after a heart attack and her only companion was her pet Pot Bellied pig called Lulu. Lulu ran outside and broke out of the fenced yard before lying down on the road to attract attention and get someone to help Jo Ann. Finally someone stopped their car to investigate the seemingly hurt pig and Lula led them to Jo Ann's house where they called an ambulance to take Jo Ann to hospital so that doctors could save her life. Jo Ann owed her life to this little piggy and as a reward she gave Lulu some of her favourite treats, Jelly donuts, Yum Yum.

I’m from a small town called Caraquet, New-Brunswick and I’ve moved to Australia about a year ago.

These are a few lesser known facts about Canada:

1. Canada is the World's Most Educated Country: over half its residents have college degrees.

2. Canada has more lakes than the rest of the world's lakes combined.

3. Canada consumes more macaroni and cheese than any other nation in the world. (I’m really missing good old Kraft Dinner)

4. I never locked my house door until I moved to Australia.

5. I also never locked my car door and kept a spare key under the rug, in case someone needed it.

6. I’ve never had anything stolen until I moved to the Gold Coast.

7. Not everyone loves Hockey, but we do respect the sport.

8. Gay marriage was officially legalized in 2005.

9. The quality of the tap water is often better than bottled water. In my family home, we use an underground well.

The Aconitine Insurance Murder

1986 in Okinawa, Japan.

A 33 year old woman visiting a beautiful small island in Okinawa suddenly complained of acute chest pain. She was immediately taken to the hospital, but died, despite the strenuous efforts of the emergency doctors.

The doctors diagnosed her death as caused by a “myocardial infarction”, an unfortunate, sudden death. Note that there are more than 40,000 death caused by myocardial infarction in Japan alone. It is not uncommon, but one young doctor named Ohno felt something was suspicious about this death, and so he took 30cc of blood sample from the woman, just in case.

Things started to get a bit fishy when a middle aged man called Kamiya, who claimed to be the woman’s husband, appeared at the insurance office. Surprisingly, the man applied to receive 2 million dollars for his wife’s death. His monthly insurance premium on her policy was $2000 a month, an amount that is improbably high for a regular businessman to be able to pay for a long period of time.

The police started to think something was wrong and began the investigation. Lots of suspicious information popped up. Kamiya and the woman were married one month after they first met. And Kamiya previously had two wives who also died in similarly suspicious manners. As a result of the two previous deaths, Kamiya had already received a substantial amount of insurance money.

Ohno also started his investigation. He tried to discover what kind of poison could lead to ventricular fibrillation, of which there are numerous.

Caffeine, Amphetamines, … and Aconitine. Aconitine is found in natural flowers, is 10 times more lethal than potassium cyanide, and was once used by Cleopatra to kill her brother. It opens the sodium channel inside the body, which leads to the excitement of the muscles and organs, resulting in death.

Aconitine was the most suspicious poison. It was a gamble for Ohno. He only had 30cc of a blood sample. Experiment equipment was not advanced yet, and they weren’t able to measure the blood many times over. Fortunately for Ohno, he was able to find aconitine in her blood.

Despite aconitine being found in his apartment, Kamiya was still confident that he was innocent. The police and Ohno could still not solve one big mystery:

Time.

Aconitine is a poison that could kill you in minutes. The last time the woman had taken medicine was more than two hours before the attack. Aconitine would have killed her in several minutes. The police tried to prove that using a thicker capsule would delay the dissolution, but they discovered that thickening the capsule only delays the poisoning for a few minutes.

Time is on Kamiya’s side. How would you solve this mystery?

… The answer was yet another of the most dangerous poisons in nature: Tetrodotoxin, a deadly neurotoxin found in blowfish (or fugu in Japanese).

He exploited the conflicting mechanisms of the two poisons. Basically, aconitine is a poison that makes your Na+ channels of your muscles and neurons open, while tetrodotoxin inhibits the Na+ channel, preventing muscles from receiving messages from the neurons. The two poisons basically cancel out each others’ effect. However, the trick is that the two have different duration of their effects, resulting in the slower disappearing aconitine killing the victim after a much longer period of time than usual.

Ohno finally discovers the mechanism, and tetrodotoxine was found in the remaining blood sample. Kamiya was arrested and was sentenced to life imprisonment. Kamiya had been testing for hours to determine the perfect amount of poison that could result in the exact timing, using rats as test subjects.

What I think is frightening is that had he not committed three murders and stopped after the second one, none of this would have been revealed.

Also what is saddening is that all of the passion and effort he devoted to find thismodus operandi could have been used in a much more benevolent way.

1. Most of the people in the UAE will show you amazing pictures on Facebook, wear amazing clothes, drive an expensive car. But what they will not tell you is that they live a life that is meant for showing off. Almost 90% of them have either more than 3 credit cards, 1 Personal Loan, 1 Car Loan, 1 Home Loan and is living hand to mouth.
2. Dubai, UAE survives and thrives on Speculation and Future Promises but hardly delivers (World Islands, Palm 2, 3, Falcon City, Technology City, Outsource Zone)
3. Dubai & the UAE has announced BILLION DOLLAR projects in City after City after City. But not completed any. For example - Logistics City, Central Enterprise Park, Residential City, Commercial City, Aviation City, Staff Village City, Golf City, Sports City, Smart City - were all announced in a big manner with amazing miniatures. Money was taken from investors. No one knows what has happened to them.
4. Dubai, UAE Brand is handled by some of the top brains in the world. It is marketed as a Dream Heaven for Billionaires. Only 10% of the population is truly rich. The majority are middle class people who struggle to survive. No one hears about them
5. UAE’s corporate sector faces massive challenges of Racism & Sexism - which continue to this day. This is not a fault of the UAE government - rather it is custom & practice followed by everyone - so no one questions.
6. Explicit job advertisements like “Wanted UK / US Educated National” or “If you are a western expatriate & holder of a UK / US passport, please apply” are advertised openly.
7. Same Job, Same Position, Same Responsibility - Your Salary with differ immensely based on the Passport you hold. Western Passports have much more power & benefits than Asian passports.
8. Salaries - African, Bangladeshi get paid the lowest. Indian, Pakistani get paid second lowest, The second highest are British, American & Australians. The highest earners are Arab Local of the country.
9. UAE’s “Emiriatization” Drive - to ensure Arab Local Citizens get employed in all companies is a total failure. The majority of Arab Locals do not like to work in private company’s or long hours. There is a complete disconnection. Most of the locals want very senior positions even if they have no experience. If you consider the carrot and stick approach - you can tell an expat that you will terminate the person and cancel his visa. However, what can you tell the Local Citizen of the country? Also the minimum salaries of any Expat can start as low as AED 500. Arab Local Citizens expect salaries of upwards of AED 8,000 just for a job of stamping papers. So it becomes impossible to get this policy going.
10. UAE really takes care of its citizens. Gives them interest free loans, educational opportunities to study in the best schools and colleges in the world. And helps them succeed in business through help of loans. However - even after all that - the majority fail to succeed.
11. All the Emirates in the UAE have at some point advertised 99 years Freehold property and visa. They had taken billions of dollars from Expats. And never completed or delivered the projects.
12. Almost ALL the information in the Media coming from Dubai, UAE about Dubai, UAE is monitored and controlled by the Government. So never expect the complete truth.
13. UAE Government advertises jobs and tenders for suppliers to come and participate. The majority of suppliers now do not take part or bid for such projects. Why? Because the majority do not get paid what is promised. Can you take a government entity to court?
14. A lot of ‘white-lies’ and ‘grey-lies’ work wonders in Dubai, UAE. And everyone gives you false statements and exaggerated claims which they never honor. From the job vacancy that promises you a promotion every year to the employee who gets the job.
15. Being explicitly honest is not something anyone does. Political Correctness & Diplomacy does. That is why you will never get the clear picture.
16. In the UAE you will be asked to pay hidden charges with no explanations - and you cannot argue example Service Tax, Maintenance Charges, Upkeep charges, Water charges - etc
17. In the UAE your annual Rent can increase 100% within one year. There is nothing you can do about it.
18. UAE parking charges were increased 100% within one year. From AED 2 per hour, it was increased to AED 50 in some places
19. UAE is very smart in Taxing people - for example in Dubai, UAE they introduced Road Toll to ‘reduce’ traffic. First they charged AED 4. Now it is become AED 5. First it was only in 2 places. Now it is almost everywhere. However has the traffic reduced? Absolutely not. They are just looking for ways to tax people without using the word ‘tax’

I have been inside King Tutankhamun’s tomb in the Valley of the Kings in Egypt.

This is the entrance to the valley.

It was surreal to walk on the sands pharaohs walked on.

The air is so dense it traps sounds. There is an odd silence as if walking through the portal of distant echoes into eons of the past.

Howard Carter, British archaeologist, discovered Tutankhamun's tomb in November 1922.

He built a low wall at the entrance of the tomb. Before Carter built the wall there was nothing but level sand.

These are the steps leading down to the entrance of the tomb. The stairway is narrow and dark, unlike this well lit photo.

The tomb is comprised of four chambers:

The Antechamber, The Annex, The Burial Chamber, The Treasury.

The Burial Chamber is surprisingly small.

To get an idea of scale, here are two men in the chamber.

I saw some of the treasures that were removed from the tomb and are housed in the Cairo Museum.

King Tut’s golden coffin was surrounded by 5,000 priceless treasures when it was discovered.

He was buried in three sarcophagi.

As I stood there in the Cairo museum staring in utter disbelief at the exquisite details of the sarcophagi, my chest cramped, frightening me!

My hands shot up over my heart.

Tears were pouring down my cheeks. Puzzling! Shocking!

That is when I experienced for the first time, being moved by beauty so profound my breath was taken away. I literally could not breathe for a few moments.

My heart was shaken by new found awareness of the stratospheric capabilities of humans to create beauty. The artistry within us. Our ability to speak the language of soul.

I am crying now as I write these words to you, I don’t know why. But tears are flowing, Maybe it is because I am grateful to be alive and to know you, a fellow creator, each one of us artists in our own way; even though we have not met.

When we plant a seed, that is an expression of the same energy that created these treasures.

We are pure, unwavering in our intention to do our share and contribute beauty, knowledge, and love.

As I looked upon these treasures I saw the timeline of us.

Us eons ago, now, and us eons into forever.
